James Francis Cameron (born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian film director, producer, screenwriter, editor, and inventor. His writing and directing work include The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). To date, his directorial efforts have grossed approximately US$1.5 billion in North America and to $3.68 billion worldwide. After several feature films, Cameron turned his focus to documentary filmmaking, and to co-developing the digital 3-D Fusion Camera System. Described by a biographer as part-scientist and part-artist, Cameron has also contributed to underwater filming and remote vehicle technologies. He returned to feature filmmaking with Avatar, which made use of the Fusion Camera System technology.

Cameron was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, the son of Shirley, an artist and nurse, and Phillip Cameron, an electrical engineer. He grew up in Chippawa, Ontario and attended Stamford Collegiate in Niagara Falls, and his family moved to Fullerton, California in 1971. While he studied physics and English at Fullerton College and California State University, Fullerton, Cameron used every opportunity to visit the film archive of the University of Southern California. To the surprise of many people, although Cameron had a large educational background in the natural sciences, he chose a philosophy major from Fullerton College in 1973. Cameron says of his time there that he was,"completely self taught in special effects. I'd go down to the USC library and pull any thesis that graduate students had written about optical printing, or front screen projection, or dye transfers, anything that related to film technology…if they'd let me photocopy it, I would. If not, I'd make notes."

After dropping out, he worked several jobs such as truck driving and wrote when he had time. After seeing the original Star Wars film in 1977, Cameron quit his job as a truck driver to enter the film industry. When Cameron read Syd Field's book Screenplay, it occurred to him that integrating science and art were possible and he wrote a ten minute science fiction script with two friends, entitled Xenogenesis. They raised money and rented a camera, lenses, the film stocks, studio and shot it in 35 mm. To understand how to operate the camera, they dismantled it and spent the first half-day of the shoot trying to figure out how to get it running.

Avatar (2009)

James Cameron promoting Avatar during the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con
In June 2005, director Cameron was announced to be working on a project tentatively titled "Project 880" (now known to be Avatar) in parallel with another project, Battle Angel. Both movies were to be shot in 3D. By December, Cameron stated that he wanted to film Battle Angel first, followed by Avatar. However in February 2006, he switched goals for the two film projects and decided to film Avatar first. He mentioned that if both films are successful, he would be interested in seeing a trilogy being made for both.

Avatar, previously known as Project 880, had an estimated budget of over $300 million and is a 3D film released on December 18, 2009. This marked his first feature film since 1997's Titanic . It is composed almost entirely of computer-generated animation, using a more advanced version of the "performance capture" technique used by director Robert Zemeckis in The Polar Express. James Cameron wrote an 80 page scriptment for Avatar in 1995 and announced in 1996 that he would make the film after completing Titanic. In December 2006, Cameron explained that the delay in producing the film since the 1990s had been to wait until the technology necessary to create his project was advanced enough. The film was originally scheduled to be released in May 2009 but was pushed back to December 2009 to allow more time for post production on the complex CGI and to give more time for theatres worldwide to install 3D projectors.
James Cameron originally intended Avatar to be 3D-only. However, this would have made the movie inaccessible for many people who have certain eye problems.

Future projects

Avatar Sequels - Cameron has mentioned Avatar sequels are being planned, including more story line with Jake and Neytiri, and to explore a moon orbiting Polyphemus.

Battle Angel - Cameron will also be writing, producing and directing Battle Angel, a live-action adaptation of the first three volumes of the manga series. Alita will be a CG character performed by an actress. Like Avatar, the film will be a mix of CG and live action. Filming will be made with the new digital 3D system Cameron has developed for Avatar. In January 2005, Cameron mentioned that the delay in making this film initially had been to wait until a sufficient number of theatres had installed 3D projectors. Pre-production on this film has been occurring since at least 2004-05, with three conceptual artists having worked for over a year on designs. As with Avatar, the movie will be marketed and distributed by 20th Century Fox worldwide. Cameron is aiming for a PG-13 rating. Laeta Kalogridis wrote the original script but Cameron is re-writing the script for Battle Angel.

Fantastic Voyage - Cameron has announced he will produce the upcoming "Fantastic Voyage" remake.

Heavy Metal - Kevin Eastman said the upcoming Heavy Metal film will have Cameron as a producer, writer and director for a segment.

The Dive - Laeta Kalogridis was also credited for writing the script of The Dive, the true story of Audrey Mestre, a free diver deceased while attempting a record. Her husband Pipin Ferreras will play his own part in the movie.

The Last Train from Hiroshima - James Cameron and Charles Pellegrino met the late Tsutomu Yamaguchi on December 22, 2009, who survived both atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Pellegrino has written a book on the atomic bombings and how it effected Japanese civilians. Cameron, Pellegrino and Yamaguchi discussed making a film about nuclear weapons. Yamaguchi told Cameron in English 'I think it's Cameron's and Pellegrino's destiny to make a film about nuclear weapons.'

Gospel for the day

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 4:14-22.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"

Word for the day

chapel • \CHAP-ul\ • noun
1 : a private or subordinate place of worship
*2 : an assembly at an educational institution usually including devotional exercises
3 : a place of worship used by a Christian group other than an established church

Example Sentence:
The school required all of its students to attend chapel daily.

Did you know?
"Chapel" is ultimately derived from the Late Latin word "cappa," meaning "cloak." How did we get from a garment to a building? The answer to this question has to do with a shrine created to hold the sacred cloak of St. Martin of Tours. In Medieval Latin, this shrine was called "cappella" (from a diminutive of "cappa" meaning "short cloak or cape") in reference to the relic it contained. Later, the meaning of "cappella" broadened to include any building that housed a sacred relic, and eventually to a place of worship. Old French picked up the term as "chapele," which in turn passed into English as "chapel" in the 13th century. In case you are wondering, the term "a cappella," meaning "without instrumental accompaniment," entered English from Italian, where it literally means "in chapel style."

Starting the New Year Right

During this morning's clipping session in Editorial, one article particularly caught our eye. The column talks about the drip... drip... drip... that fritters away the bottom line, or if you're taking a longer perspective, erodes our personal lives.

Importantly, plugging leaks is not a one-time exercise, writes columnist Marybeth Delgado of Expense Reduction Analysts. She advocates the "No-Drip Culture" which focuses on eliminating wastefulness, not cutting out necessary and productive business tasks.

Here are some points Ms. Delgado raises for bringing a No-Drip Culture into our lives:

1. Do not overlook any costs when looking for profit leaks. No business expense is sacred.

2. Constantly ask, "Is this expense really necessary?" If your answer is, "We've always done it this way," that's a sure sign of a cost that can be reduced or even eliminated altogether.

3. Write down the savings you expect for a cost-then double it. Most of the time we limit our efforts to our expectation. Why be satisfied with saving 10 percent when you may have easily achieved 20-percent savings?

4. Ensure the changes you identify are implemented. Many good money-saving ideas are lost simply through a lack of action and the drip continues.

5. Make sure you can measure the savings. That's the only way you can be sure you have achieved cost reductions. Reward yourself by recording the results of your efforts.
