Sandy Andolong hopes TV role won’t affect Christopher’s candidacy

Sandy Andolong hopes that her realistic portrayal of a vicious politician’s wife on GMA-7’s daytime soap, “Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak,” won’t hurt her husband Christopher de Leon’s chances in being elected as Board Member in the 2nd district of Batangas.

“I was worried about it,” she admitted in a recent interview with Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online. “When I got this offer, nag-dalawang isip ako. Sabi ko, a lot of people will hate me. [I told Christopher] ‘Tatay, baka maka-affect.’ Sabi n’ya, ‘No, I don’t think so. Alam naman nila na ang ginagampanan mo lang ay role. Kilala ka naman ng mga taga-Batangas.’”

“Kaya lang I know them,” she added. “When we go there and I talk to them, like no’ng ginagawa namin ang ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ mabait naman ako do’n pero nauuto ako [ng contravida character] ni Jean Garcia, and they kept telling me, ‘Ano ka ba naman. Pati ba naman ikaw? Sabi ko naman, ‘Pine-personal n’yo?’”

Unfortunately – or fortunately, if soap fans indeed hate her – Sandy won’t be joining Christopher on the campaign trail that officially starts on March 26 because of her work and some health issues particularly concerning her kidneys.

“I’m busy with tapings. Hindi ako p’wedeng mapagod masyado at saka by my doctor’s order, hindi ako p’wedeng ma-stress. Siguro pupuntahan ko ‘yung mga importanteng [election-related] event lang. ‘Yung presence ko lang, ‘wag na akong pagsalitain,” she explained.

But if she couldn’t turn down requests for her to talk, Sandy said she’d start her speech by reminding the crowd that she’s only playing a character on TV. “Ie-explain ko na hindi ako si Rowena,” she pointed out. “I’m hoping and praying for the best for my husband.”

Christopher first tried his luck in politics as Batangas vice-governor in 2007, but he lost. This time, he is aiming to be a Board Member of the province’s 2nd district that is composed of the lakeshore towns of Tingloy (where he owns a 7,000 square-meter property), Bauan, San Pascual, San Luis, Mabini, Lobo and Batangas City.

The multi-awarded actor is running under the Liberal Party with long-time movie partner, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos, who’s seeking re-election.

Issue over ‘PBB’ Q&A: Was Boy Abunda biased?
By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ

TV host Boy Abunda has been accused of performing “character assassination” and “demolition job” on some of the “Pinoy Big Brother Double Up” housemates, particularly contender Paul Jake Castillo.

One of his accusers pointed out that during “The Big Truth” episode last Feb. 12 when Boy grilled PBB’s “Big Five,” he raised “sensitive and personal questions” to Paul Jake that should not have been asked from “out of nowhere.”

The accuser theorized that the talent manager threw such questions in order to tip the scale in favor of contestant Melai Cantiveros who is said to be ABS-CBN’s “bet.”

Boy had already aired his side regarding the controversy via a national broadsheet.

“I have total freedom. My network does not in any way manipulate me, and I wouldn’t allow that. For the interview [of the housemates], not a single question came from the network,” said he.

Boy added: “What do I have to gain? And I don’t know Melai, I don’t know Jason, I ask my questions the way I ask my questions. That’s the story.”

On his part, Castillo, who eventually ended up as Second Big Placer in the latest PBB season, said that he expected such touchy questions.

"Inside the house, I learned to always prepare myself for the worst. Nung pumasok na si Boy Abunda naisip ko na may mga itatanong na matitindi. Pero I know naman my own history. I don't think I have anything to be ashamed about," he said.

But were they really touchy queries to begin with? Unfair vis-avis the kind of questions Boy asked the rest of Jason Francisco, Tibo Jumalon, and Johan Santos?

Was Boy Abunda biased back then?

Below is the transcript of all that Boy asked of each of the contestants:

Questions for Paul Jake

1. Nanonood ang sambayanan, nanonood ang buong bayan. Nakikinig, nagmamasid sa ating pag-uusap. Alam nating lahat that you come from a well-off, I mean a very hardworking family. Very, very respectable family. Very, very comfortable. And what do you think is the biggest disadvantage of being rich? Did you feel guilty about being rich? Dito sa bahay ni Kuya, were there moments when you said, ‘ay, ganun pala sila?’ because you didn’t get used to that kind of life?

2. Doon sa labas, doon sa iyong pamilya, what kind of son are you? What kind of boy is, was, Paul Jake?

3. If your friends were to describe you in one word, Paul Jake, what word would that be?

4. You’re not used to the hard life, alam namin ‘yan, but you’re a very good boy. You’re used to the comfort, because again, I emphasize the point again that your family works very, very hard. Let’s talk about learnings (sic). Patience saan?

5. Paul Jake, diretsahang tanong ito sa ating pag-uusap: Why should I vote for you? This is a contest. Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Johan? At bakit hindi ko siya dapat iboto? Why shouldn’t I vote for Tibo? Talk from the heart. Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Tibo? Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Melai? And that’s the reason why we should vote for them [Melai and Jason] because what you’re trying to say is whether we vote for them or not, they’re gonna be what?

Remember Sam? In one of your parties, parang may nasabi ka yata gusto mo ring kunin ‘yung numero ni Sam. And dapat bang ikabahala ito ni Denise, your girlfriend? Will you get her number? Are you interested?

7. I know you had your parties and gimmicks in Cebu. Deretsang tanong: Did you ever do drugs? Yes or no?

Questions for Tibo

And, puso sa puso again, are you afraid of him? May kinatatakutan ka ba?

2. You were too good to be true, sabi ng ating mga kaibigang nakakapanood sa inyo halos araw-araw. Sa iyong ikinilos dito sa Bahay ni Kuya, how much of that was true, and how much of that was kasinungalingan?

3. You’re simply too perfect. Lagi kang may comment about anything, you have something to say about somebody, etcetera. Eto tanong: are you simply perfect in so many ways, I mean not perfect as in perfect but perfect in so many ways. Diretsa: What’s wrong with you?

4. Tibo, have you always been 100% faithful to your wife? Talk about it. Alam ito ng iyong asawa? Humingi ka ng tawad?

5. You have three wonderful kids.

6. Why should I vote for you? Nanonood ang milyong-milyong tao. Why should I vote for you? Why shouldn’t I vote for Johan? Jason, why shouldn’t you vote for Jason?

Questions for Johan

1. I’ve always wanted to ask you this dahil sa mga naririnig kong kuwento. Napapanood kita dito sa loob. One time you were telling stories about gays going to the restaurant bar that you used to work for. Were there some gays who went to the restaurant where you work before who would bring blank checks? Meron talaga? Anong ginawa mo? Are you just talking about one guy? So ang sinasabi mo you’re not open to a relationship with somebody gay?

But do you really like her? Do you like Hermes?

3. Why would I vote for you? Gaano kahalaga ‘yung pera? Gaano kahalaga ‘yung premyo? Why shouldn’t I vote for Tibo? Why shouldn’t I vote for Paul Jake? Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Melisa? Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Jason?

4. Hypothetical lamang: One day you discover meron kang HIV? You’re HIV positive. Anong gagawin mo?

5. When you talk about wife, you think about marriage, in how many years do you think you will get married?

6. Do you want to be famous?

*Before he proceeded with his interview with Jason, Boy went back to Paul Jake and asked him some follow-up questions regarding his alleged drug use.

Doon sa tanong ko na you did drugs as a child, go ahead, explain that. Bilang bata, what is the worst thing about drugs?

Questions for Jason

3. Anong mga pinakagusto mo sa kanya? So, girlfriend mo na siya? Sinagot ka na ni Melisa?

4. Bakit bihira kang maligo?

7. Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Johan? Sinong mas guwapo, si Sam Milby o si Johan? Si Tibo, bakit hindi dapat iboto? Paul Jake, why shouldn’t I vote for Paul Jake?

Questions for Melai

What do you want to tell all of these people?

4. Bakit hindi ko dapat iboto si Johan? Paul Jake? Hindi ka nagka-crush kay Paul Jake? Paano ka nagpakita ng gusto sa kanya? Pinansin ka niya? Si Jason?

Melisa, may imaginary mirror, nasa harap mo.

‘A new beginning for True Faith’

By YUGEL LOSORATA

Having endured the ’90s and the last decade, True Faith opens the new era with pump-up music of strong originals that should be of good news to their fans. There’s a very good reason to keep the faith as “Love Parade” rides on clean-sounding, synth-driven pop compilation submitted into full and substantial melodic adventure. The 12-track CD to hit the market any day from now is a testament that the five-man gang headed by the now-iconic Medwin Marfil did not squander the lull sandwiching the present and 2006 – the year they released their last all-new material album “Stray To Be Found.”

Here, the group clearly captured the theme they’re comfortable experimenting with. With their name taken from one of the songs of ’80s disciple New Order, the band’s new wave connection gets through this album seamlessly, with Med admitting taking into account early influences such as China Crisis, OMD, and Berlin. Track 8 “Strangeflower” offers a high recall, feel-good groove, and innovative arrangement – all ingredients of a hit pop from that time. It was logical therefore they featured three artists outside the band in recording the number. The inclusion of Luke Mejares, Ryan Armamento (Corporate Lo-Fi), and Carlos Magno (Out of Body Special) puts emphasis to it as a frontliner for the album’s float.

However, opening song “Yun Lang” steals the show for instant radio airplay. The upbeat stroke picked as first single carries an easily likable verse melody, complemented by the voice of guest Armi Millare (of Up Dharma Down) who backed up lead singing Med. It adds glamour that she played “quality minutes” and did not overshadow the ever-distinctive vocal appeal of True Faith’s main man. The first lines of the album already got some hook, saying, “Gusto ko ay magpaiwan/ Kung ika’y magpapaiwan ‘yun lang/ Makita ka ay ayos na/ Lumilipad pakiramdam/ Huwag ka sanang lumayo pa/ ‘Yun lang aking paaalala.”

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin, Med reasoned, “We’ve considered ‘Yun Lang’ as a standout track throughout the making of the album.”

Interestingly, an even finer proof that “Love Parade” is sending a serious statement is the second track. Guitarist Allan Elgar, brother of Rivermaya’s Mike Elgar, arguably proved his worth in joining True Faith (as its latest member) by scoring the album’s killer bullet called “Pangako.” The song has all the promise of a big hit, especially with a heart-embracing chorus that goes “Pangako mo ako’y lalayo sa delubyong naranasan nitong pagod na puso/ Pangako mo iingatan ako isusulat panibagong yugto sa ating kuwento.”

Even with Allan’s knockout punch, Med, as always, dominates the songwriting department and deserves so, with effective cuts like “Pag-Asa” and “Lihim” being probable top attractions for listeners wanting mid-tempo ditties True Faith is known for.

Arrangement-wise, one can expect salutations from the 80s movement, with “Mounatin Wind” making use of a cute harmony vocal spice reminiscent of Spandau Ballet’s trick in “True.”

With respect to its legacy, True Faith picks up worthy principles from the 80s music which it solidly reshaped to meet current expectations.

“Love Parade” is under Viva Records which signed the band after it promoted a Greatest Hits collection CD off their former mother studio. Essentially, it is a new beginning, with the band’s faith in the power of competent creation ever much true.

Bruce Willis returns to comedy in 'Cop Out'

Bruce Willis is one of few actors who create memorable performances in practically any genre – whether drama (Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”), thriller (M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Sixth Sense”) or action (the blockbuster “Die Hard” film franchise).

Now, he returns to the genre that started it all for him – comedy (“The Blind Date”) -- in Warner Bros.’ “Cop Out” from director Kevin Smith.

“Cop Out” features two longtime NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen, rare, mint-condition baseball card who find themselves up against a merciless, memorabilia-obsessed gangster. Jimmy (Willis) is the veteran detective whose missing collectible is his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, and Paul (Tracy Morgan) is his “partner-against-crime” whose preoccupation with his wife’s alleged infidelity makes it hard for him to keep his eye on the ball.

“Jimmy is a cranky, irritable cop with a wisecracking sense of humor,” offers Willis. “He shoots first, asks questions later, and cracks jokes whenever he can.”

Says Smith, “During production, I sat around set all day and watched the movie in a little monitor, as directors do, seeing what the camera sees. So in reality, I sat there all day watching a Bruce Willis movie, which is what I do at home anyway for free.”

Screenwriters Robb Cullen & Mark Cullen describe Willis’ character, Jimmy, as someone who’s been a detective for over 20 years, is divorced and somewhat lonely. “He hasn’t gotten the breaks to move ahead in the department. He’s more like the gunslinger of the old West, who has his own code of conduct,” says Mark.

Robb adds, “Jimmy’s very conflicted because his ex-wife has married up and is doing very well, his daughter now is participating in that wealthy lifestyle, and he's still living in an apartment by himself. And, on top of that, his daughter’s insufferable stepfather is practically shaming Jimmy into letting him pay for his daughter’s wedding. I think all of that is adding up to making him feel less of a man at times.”

Not about to be upstaged at his own daughter’s wedding, Jimmy has made the decision to cash in his priceless ’52 Pafko baseball card to pay for something even more priceless—his daughter’s happiness. However, mid-sale, the Pafko becomes the “victim” of a robbery, right under the not-so-watchful eye of Jimmy’s partner, Paul. Paul is in the midst of his own family drama…even if it is of his own making. In addition to trying to catch criminals, he is also trying to catch his wife in the act with another man.

Michael Tadross, who produced two of the “Die Hard” movies, asserts, “I jumped at the chance to work with Bruce again. The man is brilliant, he knows what he wants and he’s a friend, so it’s always a pleasure to be around someone like that. Put Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Kevin Smith in the same room? I couldn’t wait to see what would come out of that. Those three guys are at the top of their game.”

Tadross was not the only one who’d worked with Willis on a “Die Hard” film. Offers Smith, “I’d worked with Bruce as an actor on ‘Live Free or Die Hard,’ and he called me at one point and said, ‘I’m an actor, you’re a director, we’re both from Jersey …we should do something together some day.’ So when Marc Platt said to me, ‘Hey, there’s a chance we can get Bruce Willis,’ I thought that would be amazing.”

Opening across the Philippines on March 3, “Cop Out,” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Lea Salonga duped by local concert producer?
By NEIL RAMOS

Tony-award winning actress-singer Leah Salonga’s adopted sister and longtime assistant Sheila Habab is crying foul.

Habab is accusing self-styled concert promoter Jerome Vinarao of reneging on his financial obligations to her sister in relation to a performance the latter rendered at a benefit concert, “Echoes of Dreams,” held at the Araneta Coliseum on Nov. 30, 2009.

According to Habab’s interview aired on ABS-CBN, Vinarao agreed to pay Salonga 300,000 pesos for a four-song performance but has only paid the singer 100,000 pesos.

Habab said Vinarao gave her a check amounting to 200,000 pesos after the concert but the check bounced.

Vinarao has since made himself scarce, said Habab. “He just keeps promising me dates. He never shows himself up anymore.”

In a separate interview, Vinarao denies the accusation but admits to have issued the bouncing check. "I told them not to deposit it until I tell them so," he said.

Vinarao blamed the show’s poor ticket sales for the lack of funds.

Habab refutes this, claiming that she has personal knowledge that Vinarao received at least a million pesos from a sponsor of the show.

Vinarao claims innocence, saying his accusers are just out to malign him.

Vinarao also disprove allegations that he is in hiding. "I will pay [Salonga]. I’m not running away from my obligations.”

Habab admits she used to be friends with Vinarao who has regularly produced charity concerts and events in the past.

"I believed in [Vinarao’s] objectives that's why I joined [his group]. “

Salonga is seemingly content to let her sister talk about the issue but in a statement made through the popular web-based networking site, Facebook, Salonga denied being friends with Vinarao, calling herself a “victim” of the producer.

“Just so you know, I am not now nor have I ever been a close friend of Jerome Vinarao (Echoes of Dreams producer). All claims that he's close to me are false. As in all!!!”

Sam Milby dishes advice to Melai and Jason
By JOCELYN VALLE

“Pinoy Big Brother 1” alum Sam Milby advises Melai Francisco and Jason Francisco – the winner and the second runner-up of the recently concluded third regular edition of the reality TV franchise, who are also his future co-stars – to “use and enjoy” the great opportunities that their home network, ABS-CBN, are giving them.

“Just really have a desire to do this [entertainment job] and work at it,” Sam explains to Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online. “Just keep improving because this is a great opportunity para sa kanilang dalawa. They’ll be given even a lot more opportunities so just use it and just enjoy it.”

Sam shares that he finds Melai and Jason “mabait talaga” and likes them both, but it’s the Inday Kengkay ng GenSan who amuses him a lot.

“Si Melai, grabe! Nahirapan ako [sa kanya] kasi ang bilis n’ya magsalita, grabe!

She’s naturally funny so I think she’ll do well on the show. Her character is not too far from her [own personality] so I think it will be a lot of fun,” he grins.

The 25-year-old Fil-Am singer-actor is referring to the forthcoming “Impostor” episode of Channel 2’s daytime series, “Precious Hearts Romances,” which he will headline with Melai, Jason and Maja Salvador.

“Hindi pa kami nag-start mag-taping pero nag-story [conference] na kami,” he relates but hesitates to give the story away. “Parang ‘yung character ko like David Beckham na very sought-after guy pero may asawa na, which is Maja. Melai [will provide the conflict]. “

He adds that unlike the past “Precious Hearts Romances” episodes that ran for five or six weeks, “Impostor” will have a full season of 13 weeks and will premiere either in late March or early April.

Sam is also busy working on his movie with rumored on-and-off-again flame, Anne Curtis, called “Babe, I Love You.”

Kris Aquino dismisses malicious Baby James Photo circulating the net

TV host Kris Aquino is not new to politics, being the daughter of a former president of the republic. Still, it seems she is now, once again, being made to realize how dirty politics could really be.

In a move meant to seemingly smear the candidacy of her brother presidential candidate Sen.Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III, a malicious picture of Baby James, Kris’ son with basketball player James Yap, is now making the rounds of web-based social networking sites.

The photos, said to have been first uploaded on the popular network website Facebook last year, show the young tot giving the middle finger.

Although the first picture [Baby James in yellow shirt] is somewhat disputable given that it shows Baby James apparently holding on to a dog tag chain and the protrusion of the middle finger looked quite inadvertent; the second picture [Baby James in black shirt] shows him blatantly displaying the finger right towards the camera.

Aquino is seemingly dismissive of the photo in a tweet message:

“Angel (Locsin) texted me na in Facebook, there's an edited picture of Baby James na naka-dirty finger. How foul naman to pick on a ... 2-year-old! Super major karma whoever is behind that! To prey on the innocence of a child! Hayyyyyy! So evil!”

A photo expert, who was asked to examine the photos, agrees that the second picture was faked through digital manipulation.

“The quality is very low but yeah…it looks quite sufficient. The person or persons who did this sure have plenty of time in their hands. Still, I maintain it’s a fake,” said the expert who requested anonymity.

That said, it looks like the damage has been done with many netizens already reacting to the photos.

From Twitter:

“There's an edited picture of Baby James na naka-dirty finger...dirty tricks of politics...”

“An edited picture of baby james with dirty finger???-THAT'S MEAN! sobra!!! it's unfair!!! whew! how dirty politics can get!!! grabe!”

Some comments from Facebook:

“Dirty finger from baby James, kung anu-ano kasi tinuturo eh , OMG!”

“Sweet baby james :)”

“He is a baby [there’s] nothing wrong with that... maybe there is a dirt in his middle finger, that’s why he pointed that way...kayo talaga!!! ‘pag may pamilya involve sa politika, pati bata isasali nyo!!!”

“I've encountered many kids in my work [doing the same]…it is [just] an [innocent] action, no meaning...”

“… we need to correct them before they believe in growing that the act was not bad at all… we need to teach them proper values and behavior at an early age, mahirap na kasi turuan pag matanda na.”

The showbiz website STIR alleged that the first picture originated from the account “arajasmina.multiply.com” on April 20, 2008 with the text: “happy 1st birthday baby james!”

A certain pamsalcedo commented on April 25, 2008: “Parang naka dirty finger si baby james.”

arajasmina replies on April 26, 2008: “kaka-one year old lang ni bagets, wag mo munang bigyan ng malisya hahahah.”

Sensibilities from the ‘Lord of Scents’
After winning GMA-7’s “Celebrity Duets 3” a few months back, Joel Cruz suddenly became more than a big-time businessman. He transformed into a true-blue celebrity while his moniker “Lord of Scents” provided his image more character it led to a number of endorsement deals.

The man behind the number one local perfume brand Aficionado Germany Perfume, Joel is now a more popular (and thus more credible) face which makes it easier for him to help people – a goal he is always into as payback for all the victories he has earned. As sample, he donated his “Celebrity Duets” one million prize to almost 20 charities, meaning, the big money became food, medicines, clothes, and toys for the less privileged.

“It’s mission accomplished for me having won the ‘Celebrity Duets’ since it’s really my main reason for joining,” shared the self-styled entrepreneur who is now a sought-after endorser having been tapped by the likes of Calayan, Adajar, Santre, and Center for Pop.

A self-confessed perfectionist, Joel is one who will try everything fair possible to attain a particular aim. He showed that in the televised singing and performing competition when he wore attractively odd outfits and sang unpredictable song choices to stay in the run where he ended up always belonging to the top 3 week after week.

In his quest for victory, he might have beaten personalities like Gina Alajar and Jomari Yllana. But that doesn’t mean he’s out there to shut off the lights from illuminating figures. Truth is, recipients of his civic works include the iconic villain Paquito Diaz, among other noted showbiz names. His brands are endorsed by popular stars like John Lloyd Cruz, Lovi Poe, Dennis Trillo, Boy Abunda, etc.

He expressed, “I want to set a good example by clean living and I want to share my blessings especially to the needy.”

Joel’s successful businesses – Aficionado Germany Perfume and Joel Cruz Signatures personal care line – have ensured employment to nearly a thousand employees nationwide. He also spearheads charitable activities for institutions such as the Philippine General Hospital, Tahanang Walang Hagdan, Kids Foundation, and others.

Last year, the Municipality of Bulacan (his parents’ hometown) commended him the “Dangal Ng Lipi Awardee for Trade and Industry.” His Joel Cruz Signatures was likewise awarded “Outstanding Personal Care Product Brand” at the 11th Global Brand Awards.

Halfway this year Joel is envisioning to come out with a big event that will gather all his endorsers, along with about five more additions.

Asked about how his exposure during the “Celebrity Duets” affected him, he said with a smile, “People recognize me now and ask for autographs.” His idea about the value of fragrance goes in line with popularity. He added, “If you smell good, people will embrace you more and you will be loved by everybody. When I was young I couldn’t go out of the house without putting perfume and there was a time when I had to go back home because I forgot to spray perfume.”

Nora Aunor goes under the knife for big 'comeback'
By ALEX VALENTIN BROSAS

Superstar Nora Aunor underwent cosmetic surgery, an invasive make-over if you will, to improve her appearance in preparation for her grand return to local cinema.

Nora’s beauty enhancement was performed at Shinagawa Lasik and Beauty Clinic in Tokyo, Japan. She was accompanied by her son Ian de Leon and her latest benefactor, writer-businesswoman, Aster Amoyo.

The Japan trip is Nora’s first out of the USA in recent years.

The superstar stayed in the US for some time after being cleared in a drug case. Despite that, she has already successfully earned her green card.

“Masaya ako talaga. Ang tao daw, ang kaibigan mo, mas nakikilala mo ‘pag nasa ibang lugar kayo,” she said in a report aired on "Showbiz News Ngayon," December 15.

The aesthetic procedure performed on Nora was her first. It involved work in her "laugh lines and eyebags."

The Superstar said she refused to have her eyes, which she considers her "greatest assets," operated on. She also turned down having to undergo liposuction and bust enlargement operations.

Nora is now Shinagawa Lasik and Beauty Clinic's main endorser.

The beauty center is expanding its services in Asia, which will include the Philippines.

Nora expressed profuse gratitude towards TV host Boy Abunda, a self-confessed Noranian.

“I love you Kuya Boy (Abunda). Alam kong mahal n’yo rin ako. This time talaga, makikita ko talaga ang pagmamahal n‘yo ‘pag nakita ko talaga kayo dito,” she said.

The Superstar is expected to arrive in Manila in April to start a new phase in her career. Several projects are already being lined-up for her.

While in the US, Nora performed in a few concerts in several key cities. She also appeared as guest in other shows with other Filipino performers.

Edu asks Comelec to lift ban on celebrity political endorsers
By CRISPINA MARTINEZ-BELEN

Former Optical Media Board (OMB) chairman and now vice presidential contender Edu Manzano is (as of this writing) asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to lift or suspend its plan to stop celebrities from endorsing political candidates. Edu defended his fellow showbiz celebrities in a letter addressed to Comelec Chairman Jose Melo through his lawyer, Romulo Macalintal.

In the letter, Edu gave three reasons for his stand. The first centers on the equal protection clause of the Constitution. Edu stated that other “personalities” who also endorse candidates are not asked or required to take a leave of absence from their work. These include professional basketball players, a popular inventor, bowler, etc. He adds that movie or TV “personalities” who also endorse a candidate but who have no current TV show or program can earn a living endorsing as many candidates as they want or can still continue making their movies to be shown after election. But their counterparts who have TV or radio shows are asked to stop working and are deprived of their livelihood by endorsing candidates.

The second involves deprivation of property without due process. He believes that movie and TV stars should not be deprived of lawful means of livelihood by the exercise of their right of suffrage or by merely campaigning for their chosen candidates. In Edu’s case, this means curtailing existing contracts with his fellow stars.

The third reason touches on the right to freedom of expression. Anyone, he explains, has the right to express his or her choice of candidates. Requiring a media personality to take a leave of absence because he is exercising this right “practically restrains or restricts an expression in advance of actual publication and dissemination.”

Edu asked the Comelec to immediately act on his petition since the resolution was supposed to take effect last Feb. 13, a week after its publication.

Edu also said the government may even profit from celebrity endorsers by taxing their income from political endorsements. But, “not all celebrities are endorsing politicians for a fee. Some of them are making endorsements because they truly believe in what the candidate stands for,” he clarified. However, with respect to those getting paid, the government does collect withholding, value-added and other forms of taxes on professional fees.

In this case, the government should prefer that celebrities are paid “because then the National Treasury makes extra money in the process,” Edu said. He added that the professional fee payments to celebrities could help the Comelec monitor closely election-related spending by the candidates.

The vice-presidentiable expressed confidence that the Comelec would consider judiciously his plea to suspend the rule that requires movie and TV celebrities who have endorsed politician to take a leave of absence during the campaign period.

“We are hopeful the Comelec will recognize the soundness of our petition to review this rule, as contained in Section 36 of Resolution 8758,” Edu said. The rule also covers media practitioners such as newspaper columnists and broadcast public affairs personalities.

“Celebrities in America are free to openly campaign for any candidate. They are in fact also free to criticize candidates in the spirit of free expression,” Edu added. “This brings us to this question: If movie and TV stars cannot openly support politicians without taking a vacation, can they openly criticize politicians and still keep appearing in shows?”

Incidentally, Edu was former vice mayor of Makati (1998-2001) and was national president of the Vice Mayors League of the Philippines and the Vice Mayors Foundation. During his tenure, he won the Parangal ng Bayan award and the Huwarang Pilipino Award for Public Service.

GMA Network statement on talents endorsing candidates
GMA Network agrees with the interpretation of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and the Comelec’s Legal Department of Section 6.6 of the Fair Elections Act concerning media personalities campaigning for or endorsing candidates.

However, given that Comelec has clarified that it is not yet implementing this particular provision, in fairness to the Network’s talents and in order not to put them and the candidates they may be endorsing at a disadvantage, GMA Network will not at this time require its on-cam talents who campaign for or endorse candidates to take a leave of absence from their programs.

Dingdong’s statement
Here’s Dingdong Dantes’ official statement regarding the Comelec issue:

“The Comelec rule prevents artists from participating responsibly in a very important political exercise. It even deprives some artists the chance to earn extra income only because they are working in a candidate’s campaign. Worst, it forces many artists like me who are volunteering for Kuya Noynoy Aquino for free, even shouldering our own expenses, to choose between making a decent living and making a difference in a supposedly democratic exercise. I appeal to the sense of reason of the Comelec and Supreme Court to clarify the present issue and what I perceive as a flaw in the law. I request legal luminaries to guide and support us on this important issue. Most of all, I call on my friends and fellow workers in the industry to make our common stand.”

Judy Ann Santos on being Jamby’s ‘folly’: 'I was deeply hurt'
By NEIL RAMOS

Actress Judy Ann Santos admits she was “deeply hurt” with the recent statement made by Sen. Maria Ana Consuelo "Jamby" Madrigal about the use of actors in election campaigns being “an insult to the Filipino intelligence.”

"Honestly...[I was hurt] with the words she used [and how she said] she regrets getting my services... Of course, I am not callous. I got hurt because I really believed she got my services [then] because she actually believed in me and it was a sincere offer," Judy Ann said.

Madrigal made her statement at the "Inquirer First Edition: Presidential Debates," organized by the Philippine Daily Inquirer and co-sponsored by Globe Telecom and the UP College of Mass Communication.

Without naming Santos, a celebrity she enlisted during her senatorial campaign in 2004, the re-electionist senator was quoted as saying thus: "I have seen the folly of my ways... I will not repeat [getting a celebrity endorser] because I do not believe you [must] repeat a mistake. But I also don't believe you should perpetuate lies that are perpetuated by a big budget."

Santos said she respects Madrigal’s opinion.

“I won’t prevent [her from sharing her opinion] nor will I pick a fight [with her], or even answer [the seeming challenge] as if I have no sense of gratitude. I am an educated person."

Asked how she found herself supporting Madrigal, who was then widely perceived as a mere unknown running solely on big bucks, Santos gave a succinct answer.

“I thought that it's okay. We were friends and she belongs to the same party as that of my Tatay Ron [the late Fernando Poe, Jr.]."

Santos denied it was all about the money. Madrigal reportedly paid her a hefty sum to appear in ads and join in political sorties.

“[My career] is not all about money. It’s not as if because I am from show business, there’s always money involved [with the services I give], no. Not all actors are the same. Please don’t lump us all in the same boat. It’s like saying that we weren’t brought up properly, schooled properly…and that we will only act, do something, when we get paid.”

Santos said she does not regret campaigning for the former senatorial candidate.

“I did it because I believed in her. It's just that, [I didn’t realize] she didn’t believe in me."

“Maybe before one endorses a politician, it is best that one should get to really know them first.”

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with DZMM, Madrigal clarified her stand on the matter saying she did not regret getting Santos' service during the 2004 senatorial campaign.

She made it clear that she is grateful for the part Santos played in that election, which allowed her to win a seat in the august halls of the senate.

Madrigal said she already thanked Santos personally twice—right after winning in 2004 and before announcing her candidacy for the May 2010 polls.

As to making a statement that decried the use of celebrity endorsers, Madrigal said she was simply emphasizing the need for people to focus more on the candidates' actual plans or platforms.

Kris and James' b-day wish: A stronger relationship
By ALEX VALENTIN BROSAS

TV host Kris Aquino and her husband, cager James Yap, exchanged expensive gifts during their joint birthday party held recently at Felix Restaurant in Greenbelt 5, Makati City.

Snippets of the party was shown on "Showbiz News Ngayon," February 15.

Kris said she was very happy that one of her wishes came true during the party and that’s to have balloons similar to those seen in the hit movie, "Sex and the City."

The couple’s party was well-attended, with Kris’ brother, sister, nephews, nieces, friends and collagues all in attendance.

Kris’s sons Josh and Baby James were also present as with Kris’ ABS-CBN family from “The Buzz” and “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo,” and James’ Purefoods family.

Also spotted there were director Chito Rono, Regal matriarch Mother Lily Monteverede, ABS-CBN Channel Head Cory Vidanes, "Showtime" director and creator Bobet Vidanes and ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Deo Endrinal.

Comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas surprised everyone when she planted a kiss on James’ cheek.

“Siyempre, wala naman siyang choice. Love, love, love,” Ai Ai said, laughing.

Kris was adviced by a feng shui expert to throw a birthday party and to cap it off with a glass of wine with her friends to thwart bad luck.

“Binibiro nila akong lahat, 'Sabi mo small party, (pero) buong mundo (nandito).' Lahat ng mga in-invite namin talaga nag-effort na pumunta dito,” Kris said.

Of course, the couple’s gift to each other was among the most talked about topic at the event.

‘Yung camera, that was my gift (to James), tapos lupa,” Kris shared.

The lot, we discovered, is located in San Mateo, Rizal. Kris bought it for James last December.

She saw the property when she taped her soap “Kung Tayo’s Magkakalayo” near the area and she fell in love with it. It was reported that the property was worth P5 million, but many think it is worth more than that.

Harrison Ford plays eccentric doctor in 'Extraordinary Measures'

Harrison Ford stars in Columbia Pictures’ new medical thriller “Extraordinary Measures” as Dr. Robert Stonehill, a brilliant but unappreciated and unconventional scientist who teams up with John Crowley (Brendan Fraser), the father of two children diagnosed with a fatal disease to find the cure.

Six years ago, Ford read Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Geeta Anand’s Wall Street Journal article, and later Anand’s book entitled “The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million – and Bucked the Medical Establishment – in a Quest to Save His Children,” on John Crowley and the Crowley family. Captivated by multiple themes, Ford recognized the makings of a movie in this compelling material.

“I thought Geeta’s book had something to say about personal courage, initiative, parents’ love, and the power to overcome extraordinarily difficult circumstances,” remembers Ford. “If we could wrestle this into the shape of a movie, we would be bringing a story to the screen which would enrich people’s lives.”

Compressing the story’s timeline of events included assessing how to best represent the numerous people who assisted John in his development of the drug that would save his children. “There were many people who helped John along the way, from scientists to business men. And there were a number of doctors for whom John raised money,” explains screenwriter Robert Nelson Jacobs. “We composited all of these people into one character – Dr. Robert Stonehill. John is very ‘straight ahead,’ and Dr. Stonehill marches to the beat of his own drum. I realized that putting the two of them together would make sparks fly. It would create a lot of dramatic tension.”

Ford (who both stars and serves as executive producer on the film) saw Dr. Stonehill as an intriguing opportunity both in storytelling and as an actor. “He’s a composite of people who played different parts in the Crowleys’ story but, for me, he’s also a composite of things I’ve observed in my research. He represents aspects of a scientist, and also aspects of a loner, an iconoclast,” explains Ford. “And his relationship with John Crowley is an interesting kind of relationship for me as an actor. Their relationship is sometimes contentious, not at all smooth, but there are also moments of co-joined purpose. It’s a complicated dynamic.”

“It’s two men with a mission; one to save his family, the other to prove he’s right,” elaborates producer Michael Shamberg. “Two men against the system; I don’t think you can go wrong when you have underdogs fighting for something right. And, given the current health care debate, the public seems particularly primed to root for characters who take control of important issues, such as this one, that affect the fate of their loved ones.”

To build Stonehill’s character while authenticating the science in the script overall, Ford and Jacobs turned to experts in the field for help and credibility.

“I’ve been gratified by the willingness of the science community to help us work out ways to get the story more correct on a scientific level,” says Ford. “In particular, to work out a way of representing the scientific process which is largely practiced in the head.”

Opening soon across the Philippines , “Extraordinary Measures” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Mel Gibson, tougher and deadlier in ‘Edge of Darkness’

He’s back! After less than a decade, Mel Gibson returns to the big screen as a leading man via the kind of role that made him a global box-office superstar. He gets tougher and deadlier as an avenging detective looking into his political-activist daughter’s death in the high-profile action thriller, “Edge of Darkness.” From James Bond director Martin Campbell of “Casino Royale” fame, the new film is described by some critics to have more than the total impact of Gibson’s mega-successful “Lethal Weapon” series. They add: “It’s a perfect comeback for him!”

“The script called for an actor old enough to have a 24-year-old daughter,” said Campbell, “who also possessed a ferocity. The list of big stars that fit the bill was exactly one name long. There was nobody else. I liken Mel to the old Hollywood stars like Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin, William Holden, people like that, and we’ve got none of them now, do we? Everyone now is so lightweight. Even George Clooney, who is a terrific actor, he’s too polished. Mel has this masculine kind of emotional weight that others don’t. Eastwood is gone (from acting) and Harrison Ford, he’s got the grit, but he doesn’t have the menace power.”

Equally excited for playing the character of Boston cop Thomas Craven, Gibson also talks about turning 54 this month: “This journey is more than half over. I’m way past the halfway mark. It’s kind of scary. And you ask yourself, ‘What the hell have I really done? What have I accomplished?’ And it seems pretty puny… we’re all so transient. The mission is leave something.” On Jesus Christ: “Here’s a guy that was killed in public and then thousands of people saw him back from the dead. Um, I’m sorry, that one is hard to deny.” On protecting daughters in the world: “Oh, you get scared. We all know what dogs all guys are because we’re guys. But we shouldn’t despair. The beautiful truth is that all women are smarter than men.”

An extremely wealthy man as the producer of the “The Passion of Christ” and a long-time player in the real-estate market, Gibson also confesses that he came back to acting only to prove to the moviegoers worldwide that he can still do something fresher, bigger and better.

“Edge of Darkness” also stars Ray Winstone and Danny Huston. Written by Oscar winner William Monahan (“The Departed”), it is the second biggest grossing film after “Avatar” on its three-day opening weekend (Jan. 29-31) in North America.

The band has produced a formidable string of hits in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s that have earned for it a total of 19 gold albums, 13 platinum albums, 12 Top Tens, and five No. One. From its singles, it has scored 21 Top Ten hits, five No. One records and five gold singles. In all, Chicago has sold over 120 million albums worldwide.

Another big factor that has inspired Chicago in its early years was the show of admiration and support by some of the big names in rock who have turned avid fans of the group, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Wilson, Al Kooper and Carlos Santana.

Starting as a rock band composed of versatile instrumentalists, the group initially played a series of late-night jams at clubs on and off campus in Chicago in 1967, until it turned professional as a cover band called The Big Thing and, later, Chicago Transit Authority (eventually shortened to Chicago).

Chicago’s triumphant streak continued through the 1990s. It received one of the highest recognitions from the entertainment industry when it was honored with its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 23, 1992.

The members of Chicago are Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, Walter Parazaider, Lou Bardini, Jason Scheff, Tris Imboden and Keith Howland.

Claudine Barretto enraged over land dispute
By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ

Something is making Claudine Barretto mad, and it’s not Mark Anthony.

The actress and her husband, Raymart Santiago, are caught in a land dispute after they were allegedly tricked by the seller.

It turned out that the five-hectare farm lot in Cuyambay, Tanay, already has an owner and is set to sign the papers this month.

She said they have been waiting for years for the documents to be accomplished.

“Whether ibalik ‘yung pera namin or ano, the fact is more than a year na… magti-three na ‘yung anak ko [Santino] this year, and si Sabina, six years old na.

"Lahat ng oras na dapat nagtatatakbo sila sa farm nila and everytime na may long weekend, hindi namin alam kung saan kami pupunta… Hindi naman porket mga bata kami ni Raymart eh puwede na nila kami lokohin,” an enraged Claudine said on “Showbiz Central.”

As of February 13, Claudine said that according to her lawyer, Raymond Fortun, the papers are okay.

“Okay na daw ‘yung papers. But we’ll have to wait for something again. We’re really praying about it eh. Halos atakihin na ko sa puso!” she said.
